Zyprexa (Olanzapine)

Olanzapine is a drug that is commonly marketed as Zyprexa. Zyprexa is used to treat symptoms of schizophrenia in people who are over the age of 13. Schizophrenia is a mental disorder that causes the victim to have strong or inappropriate emotions, have a loss of interest in life and think unusual thoughts. Zyprexia is also used to treat bipolar disorder and other mental illnesses. Zyprexia is in a class of medication call atypical anti-psychotics. Zyprexia works by changing the amounts of natural substances in the brain.

Zyprexa should be used exactly as your doctor or prescription label entails. Do not take more or less than is prescribed by your doctor. Do not suddenly stop taking Zyprexia as this may cause adverse effects to your body. Even if you feel well while taking Zyprexa do not stop taking it. Zyprexa can only treat symptoms of schizophrenia it cannot cure your condition. Your doctor will most likely start you on a small dosage of Zyprexa and gradually increase it as sees fit. This will ensure the correct dosage amount for your situation. Zyprexa may also be used for treating other conditions as your doctor sees fit.

Tell your doctor if you are allergic to olanzapine or any other ingredients that are in Zyprexa. Tell your doctor if you are breast feeding, pregnant, or going to become pregnant in the near future. This information can help your doctor prescribe the best dosage amount for you or a different medication all together. Zyprexa may cause some side effects; most of these side effects are not serious but if they become severe or do not stop contact your doctor. Side effects include:

  • drowsiness
  • dizziness
  • restlessness
  • unusual behavior
  • depression
  • difficulty falling asleep or staying asleep
  • weakness
  • difficulty walking
  • constipation
  • weight gain
  • dry mouth
  • pain in arms, legs, back, or joints
  • breast enlargement or discharge
  • late or missed menstrual periods
  • decreased sexual ability

Some side effects are serious and if you experience any of them contact your doctor immediately. Serious side effects include:

  • seizures
  • changes in vision
  • swelling of the arms, hands, feet, ankles, or lower legs
  • unusual movements of your face or body that you cannot control
  • sore throat, fever, chills, and other signs of infection
  • very stiff muscles
  • excess sweating
  • fast or irregular heartbeat
  • rash
  • hives
  • difficulty breathing or swallowing

Zyprexa may have similar side effects to Abilify. Abilify side effects include:

  • headache
  • nervousness
  • drowsiness
  • dizziness
  • heartburn
  • constipation
  • diarrhea
  • stomach pain
  • weight gain
  • increased appetite
  • increased salivation
  • pain, especially in the arms, legs, or joints
