ProSom (Estazolam)

Estazolam which is marketed as ProSom is a medication to help treat insomnia or difficulty falling asleep. ProSom is a kind of medicine called benzodiazepines which works by slowing down brain activity to help you fall asleep more quickly and help you stay asleep once you are asleep. There are several kinds of medication that treat insomnia, however, there are also some other options you can take such as taking a melatonin supplement. Because ProSom is designed to help you fall asleep, take ProSom right before bed. You most likely will feel sleepy after taking it. Plan on sleeping a full 8 hours after you have taken ProSom. Follow the instructions that are given to you by your doctor or the instructions on the prescription packaging. Do not take more than your prescribed dosage because ProSom can be habit forming. If you are expecting not to sleep a full eight hours do not take ProSom. After taking ProSom your sleeping problems should be resolved in about 7 to 10 days. If you sleep problems do not improve or worsen any time while you are taking ProSom please contact your doctor. Also contact your doctor if there is any change in behavior or thoughts.

If you need to stop taking ProSom contact your doctor first. If you suddenly stop taking ProSom you can expect to experience withdrawal symptoms, because of this, your doctor will probably gradually decrease your dosage. Do not take ProSom if you are allergic to estazolam. Some common side effects of taking ProSom include:

  • hangover effect (grogginess)
  • drowsiness
  • dizziness
  • weakness
  • dry mouth
  • constipation
  • aggression
  • agitation
  • changes in behavior
  • slowed or uncoordinated movements
  • muscle stiffness
  • leg pain

Tell your doctor if any of these symptoms do not stop or are severe. If you experience any of the following side effects contact your doctor immediately, these can be serious:

  • fever
  • blisters
  • rash
  • hives
  • swelling of the eyes, face, lips, tongue, throat, arms, hands, feet, ankles, or lower legs
  • difficulty breathing or swallowing
  • hallucinations (seeing things or hearing voices that do not exist)
  • thinking about harming or killing yourself or planning or trying to do so
  • anxiety
  • memory problems

Some supplement also cause side effects that may be similar to ProSom. A common supplement to help with insomnia is Melatonin, which is a hormone that can affect many processes in the body. Melatonin side effects may include:

  • Sleepiness during daytime
  • Feeling Dizzy
  • Headaches
  • Gastric disturbance and abdominal discomfort
  • Confusion
  • Sleepwalking
  • Vivid dreams or Vivid Nightmares
  • Mental or Mood Changes
  • Lowering of body temperature
  • Decreased libido
  • Breast enlargement in men (gynecomastia)
  • Decreased sperm count

Be sure not to over dose on ProSom, if you do call your poison control center at 1-800-222-1222. Symptoms of overdose may include:

  • sleepiness
  • slowed breathing
  • confusion
  • loss of coordination
  • slurred speech
  • coma (loss of consciousness for a period of time)

If the victim has ceased breathing, or has collapsed, call 911 immediately.
