Pristiq (Desvenalfaxine)

Pristiq (Desvenalfaxine) is used as an antidepressant. Pristiq is a class of drug called SNRIs (selective serotonin and norepinephrine reuptake inhibitors). By increasing the amounts of serotonin and norepinephrine, which are natural substances in the brain, helps maintain a healthy mental balance.

Pristiq should be taken around the same time every day. Follow the directions on the prescription label. Do not take more or less than your doctor prescribed. If you have any questions talk with your pharmacist or your doctor and they will be able to help you. Pristiq will only treat symptoms; it will not cure depression completely. It may take a little while for you to feel that Pristiq is working, but when you do keep taking it even if you feel well. Consult with your doctor before discontinuing use of Pristiq. Your doctor, in most cases, will decrease your dose gradually. If you stop taking Pristiq you may feel withdrawal symptoms such as:

  • dizziness,
  • nausea,
  • headache,
  • irritability,
  • difficulty falling asleep or staying asleep,
  • diarrhea,
  • anxiety,
  • extreme tiredness,
  • unusual dreams,
  •  Sweating.

If you experience any of these symptoms please contact your doctor quickly.

Pristiq has been known to cause side effects in some people. If these side effects are severe or do not desist please contact your doctor:

  • constipation
  • loss of appetite
  • dry mouth
  • dizziness
  • extreme tiredness
  • unusual dreams
  • yawning
  • sweating
  • uncontrollable shaking of a part of the body
  • pain, burning, numbness, or tingling in part of the body
  • enlarged pupils (black circles in the centers of the eyes)
  • blurred vision
  • changes in sexual desire or ability
  • Difficulty urinating.

If you experience any of these next side effects call your doctor immediately because they are serious:

  • rash
  • hives
  • swelling
  • difficulty breathing
  • fast heartbeat
  • cough
  • chest pain
  • fever
  • coma (loss of consciousness for a period of time)
  • seizures
  • hallucinations (seeing things or hearing voices that do not exist)
  • fever, sweating, confusion, fast or irregular heartbeat, and severe muscle stiffness
  • unusual bleeding or bruising
  • nosebleeds
  • small red or purple dots on the skin
  • nausea
  • vomiting
  • diarrhea
  • headache
  • difficulty concentrating
  • memory problems
  • confusion
  • weakness
  • problems with coordination
  • increased falls
  • fainting

Some side effects similar to Effexor side effects are:

  • Constipation
  • Dry mouth
  • dizziness
  • yawning
  • sweating
  • changes in sexual desire or ability
  • Uncontrollable shaking of a part of the body.

Pristiq has caused a small number of children, teenagers, and young adults during clinical studies to become suicidal, or thinking about harming themselves. If you experience any of these feelings call your doctor for further treatment and guidance.  If an overdose of Pristiq occurs please call 911 if the victim is not breathing or unresponsive otherwise call your poison control center or contact your doctor.
