Pravachol (Pravastatin)


Pravachol is known medically around the world as pravastatin. This medication is prescribed together with change in life style and eating habits to help reduce the amount of cholesterol in the blood stream. Pravachol is in a class of medication that helps fight cholesterol called HMG-CoA reductase inhibitors (statins). It works by slowing down the natural production of cholesterol by the human body. Cholesterol is dangerous because it builds up against artery and blood vessel walls which decreases blood flow, decreased blood flow to the brain, lungs and heart can cause adverse problems for people. Lowering the amount of cholesterol in the blood is helpful in preventing certain types of heart disease and strokes. Pravachol is helpful but you also need to make some life style changes in order to feel the full effects of this medication.

Pravachol should be used exactly as prescribed by your doctor or directed by your pharmacist. You will probably be started on a low dose and gradually increase it to find the best dosage for your situation. Tell your doctor about any medications or supplements you are taking. Tell your doctor if you are pregnant, going to become pregnant, or breast feeding.

Pravochol has causes some side effects. Though most of these are not serious if you experience any of these and they are severe or do not go away contact your doctor at once. Side effects include:

  • heartburn
  • headache

If you experience any of the following side effects contact your doctor because they are serious:

  • muscle pain, tenderness, or weakness
  • lack of energy
  • fever
  • yellowing of the skin or eyes
  • pain in the upper right part of the stomach
  • nausea
  • extreme tiredness
  • unusual bleeding or bruising
  • loss of appetite
  • flu-like symptoms
  • rash
  • hives
  • itching
  • difficulty breathing or swallowing
  • swelling of the face, throat, tongue, lips, eyes, hands, feet, ankles, or lower legs
  • hoarseness

Pravachol may cause similar side effects to Lipitor. Lipitor side effects may include:

  • diarrhea
  • constipation
  • gas
  • headache
  • joint pain

More serious Lipitor side effects include:

  • muscle pain, tenderness, or weakness
  • lack of energy
  • fever
  • chest pain
  • nausea
  • extreme tiredness
  • unusual bleeding or bruising
  • loss of appetite
  • pain in the upper right part of the stomach
  • flu-like symptoms
  • yellowing of the skin or eyes
  • rash
  • hives
  • itching
  • difficulty breathing or swallowing
  • swelling of the face, throat, tongue, lips, eyes, hands, feet, ankles, or lower legs
  • hoarseness
