FDA News: Thermogram Is Not Better than Mammogram

In contrast , thermography shouldn’t be used in the place of mammography for breast cancer screening or diagnosis. The Food and Drug Administration ( FDA ) claims mammography an Xray of the breastis still the best way of finding breast cancer in its earliest, most treatable stages. Thermography produces an infrared image that shows the patterns of heat and blood flow on or near the outer layer of the body. The agency has sent one or two caution letters to medical care suppliers and a thermography manufacturer who allege the thermal imaging can stand in place of mammography. Sites have been touting thermography as a substitute for mammography and claim that thermography can find breast cancer years before it might be noted by mammography. The difficulty is that FDA has no proof to support these claims. “Mammography remains the handiest screening technique for spotting breast cancer in its early, most treatable stages” recounted Helen Barr, M.D, director of the Division of Mammography Quality and Radiation Programs in the FDA’s Center for Devices and Radiological Health. “Women shouldn’t rely only on thermography for the screening or diagnosis of breast cancer.” “While there is a load of proof that mammography is valuable in breast cancer detection, there’s simply no proof that thermography can take its place,” recounted Barr.
