Colestid (Colestipol)

Colestipol is a medication that is used to treat the symptoms of high cholesterol. Colestipol is marketed as the drug Colestid. There are many drugs currently that are used to treat high cholesterol. Colestid is important to use with diet change. A healthy diet will help increase the effectiveness of this drug. The reduction of fatty substances like cholesterol helps to increase the blood flow to your brain, lungs, heart, and other vital organs. Increased blood flow means that there will be more oxygen to these areas, which will help your body function better.

Colestid should be taken as directed by your doctor or as instructed on your prescription bottle. You should take Colestid 1 to 4 hours before you take any other medications because it can interfere with the body’s ability to absorb the other medications. Colestid will not cure your symptoms but will help control them along with a healthy diet. If you feel well continue to take Colestid. Talk to your doctor before you stop taking Colestid.

Before you start taking Colestid, it may be a good idea to talk to your doctor about your options. Tell your doctor if you are allergic to colestipol. Tell your doctor all medications and supplements that you are taking as to make sure that Colestid is compatible with what you are taking. Tell your doctor if you are pregnant or will become pregnant in the near future. When taking Colestid you may experience some side effects. If any of these side effects do not go away or are severe talk to your doctor at once:

  • constipation
  • belching
  • nausea
  • vomiting
  • gas

Some experienced a very serious side effect. If you experience this call your doctor immediately:

  • unusual bleeding (such as bleeding from the gums or rectum)

Colestid may have similar side effects to Crestor. Some Crestor side effects include:

  • Headache
  • Muscle pain
  • Abdominal pain
  • Weakness
  • Nausea

If you experience any unusual side effects while taking Colestid or something is troubling to you feel free to talk to your doctor. Your doctor may need to change something in your prescription.

Colestid needs to be stored in a tightly closed container away from excessive heat and moisture (like the bathroom). The pills dissolve in water so you must maintain the integrity of those pills for them to be effective.

Only take the amount that is prescribed to you. Do not let anyone else take your prescription. If you have any questions about Colestid contact your doctor for more information.
