Anafranil (Clomipramine)

Anafranil or Clomipramine is a medication used to treat symptoms of obsessive-compulsive disorder. Obsessive-compulsive disorder is a condition where the patient will repeat unwanted thoughts and the need to perform certain behaviors over and over.  Anafranil is part of the medication class of tricyclic antidepressants. It changes the amount of serotonin in the brain so that there is a proper balance.

Anafranil should be taken exactly as prescribed by your doctor. Eventually you will only take Anafranil once a day before bedtime. Follow the instructions that your doctor has given you on taking this medication. Or follow the prescription label. In some clinical studies Anafranil has caused people up to the age of 24 became suicidal or had thoughts about harming themselves.  But these cases were only with those who took antidepressants together with Anafranil. Tell your doctor if you are allergic to Clomipramine or any other ingredients in Anafranil. Tell your doctor about any supplements that you are taking. Tell your doctor if you are pregnant, going to become pregnant, or are breast feeding. Anafranil can cause some other side effects. Like any medication if your side effects do not go away or become severe you should contact your doctor at once for more guidance. Side effects include:

  • drowsiness
  • dry mouth
  • nausea
  • vomiting
  • diarrhea
  • constipation
  • nervousness
  • decreased sexual ability
  • decreased memory or concentration
  • headache
  • stuffy nose
  • change in appetite or weight

If you experience any of the following side effects contact your doctor at once as they are serious:

  • uncontrollable shaking of a part of the body
  • seizures
  • fast, irregular, or pounding heartbeat
  • difficulty urinating or loss of bladder control
  • believing things that are not true
  • hallucinations (seeing things or hearing voices that do not exist)
  • eye pain
  • shakiness
  • difficulty breathing or fast breathing
  • severe muscle stiffness
  • unusual tiredness or weakness
  • sore throat, fever, and other signs of infection

Anafranil may cause similar side effects of Lexapro.  Lexapro side effects include:

  • nausea
  • diarrhea
  • constipation
  • changes in sex drive or ability
  • drowsiness
  • increased sweating
  • dizziness
  • heartburn
  • stomach pain
  • excessive tiredness
  • dry mouth
  • increased appetite
  • flu-like symptoms
  • runny nose
  • sneezing
